Carotid Artery Disease
What is it?.. Carotid stenosis
Let’s start with the word “carotid artery”, it is an artery that is located at the level of the neck and brings oxygen to the brain. Its diameter measures approximately 6-7mm. Like all arteries, the carotids can be affected by atherosclerosis or inflammation. The accumulation of cholesterol under the endothelium causes the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. The risk of stroke is then very high. It is the second cause of AVC or TIA after the cardiac cause.
Diagnosis and treatment
If the stenosis is greater than 60%, surgical treatment of the carotid artery or dilation with endovascular stenting should be discussed.
Medical treatment is always in order. Surgery gives better results than dilation. The risk of stroke is then reduced by half. Dr. H. Benjelloun’s Vascular Cabinet makes the diagnosis by Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries and treats the carotid arteries by surgery or stenting.
